Legal definition of Ad litem

 

It is a Latin word which means "for the purposes of the legal action only".

Example: When a parent files petition for his or her minor child he or she is filing the same as "Guardian at litem" (guardian just for the purposes of filing the petition) or for a person who is incompetent.

Term also used in property litigation, where a person may represent on behalf of the estate in any court proceedings
